Could not get pipeline: preAuthenticateRequest (domain: )

I recently upgraded to SiteCore 9.0 initial release but can't move forward because of this error message

[InvalidOperationException: Could not get pipeline: preAuthenticateRequest (domain: )]
   Sitecore.Pipelines.DefaultCorePipelineManager.Run(String pipelineName, PipelineArgs args, String pipelineDomain, Boolean failIfNotExists) +199
   Sitecore.Pipelines.DefaultCorePipelineManager.Run(String pipelineName, PipelineArgs args, String pipelineDomain) +18
   Sitecore.Pipelines.DefaultCorePipelineManager.Run(String pipelineName, PipelineArgs args) +18
   Sitecore.Pipelines.PreAuthenticateRequest.PreAuthenticateRequestPipeline.Run(BaseCorePipelineManager corePipelineManager, PreAuthenticateRequestArgs args) +66
   Sitecore.Web.RequestEventsHandler.OnBeginRequest(HttpContextBase context) +178
   Sitecore.Web.RequestEvents.OnBeginRequest(HttpContext context) +61
   Sitecore.Nexus.Web.HttpModule.–(Object “, EventArgs ”) +61
   System.Web.SyncEventExecutionStep.System.Web.HttpApplication.IExecutionStep.Execute() +141
   System.Web.HttpApplication.ExecuteStepImpl(IExecutionStep step) +48
   System.Web.HttpApplication.ExecuteStep(IExecutionStep step, Boolean& completedSynchronously) +71

is there any configuration option I need to set/remove to resolve this? or is it a database/code issue?

  • Can you check your Sitecore.config

    There should be a section looks like:

    <!-- Executes before the ASP.NET Authenticate event. -->
    <preAuthenticateRequest>
    <processor type="Sitecore.Pipelines.PreprocessRequest.CheckIgnoreFlag, Sitecore.Kernel" />
    <processor type="Sitecore.Pipelines.HttpRequest.IgnoreList, Sitecore.Kernel">
    <prefixes hint="list">
    </prefixes>
    </processor>
    <processor type="Sitecore.Pipelines.PreAuthenticateRequest.SiteResolver, Sitecore.Kernel" resolve="true" />
    </preAuthenticateRequest>
